CRC Visits Alex Montgomery 5th Annual Cruise-In
Several members of the CRC car club made the short trip east of
Burkesville on 90 to Alex Montgomery Chevy-GMC to attend their 5th
Annual Cumberland River Cruise-In. The cruise-in began at 9:30 and we
arrived shortly after it started. There were already quite a few
vehicles lined up around the parking lot. The employees were fixing food
and there were coolers with drinks for the people that attended. A band
played music during the cruise-in and also announced the winning numbers
for the door prizes that were given away. The weather couldn't have been
nicer, it was really nice with hardly a breeze blowing. Plenty of people
from in and out of town cruised in and enjoyed the music, food and
friendship. There were many different types of vehicles, including
antique cars, street rods, pickup trucks, convertibles and race cars.![]()
Below
are a few of the pictures taken at the cruise-in, there is a link below

Cruising To Byrdstown
As the Alex Montgomery Cumberland River Cruise-In was coming to an end,
several members decided to ride over to Byrdstown and see what was going
on at the cruise-in at the Shell filling station. A few members stopped
and filled the gas tank, then drove back out to the Chevy dealership and
met the other club members that were going to the Byrdstown Cruise-In.
We formed a line and followed each other through Albany, across the
TN-KY state line and then on to Byrdstown. There were plenty of vehicles
already parked at the Shell station and the band was warming up when we
parked. Our group got together and took a picture of the members that
went, then I began taking pictures of some of the vehicles that had
cruised in.
One
of the sharpest cars at the cruise-in was a VW with a Chevy engine,
extremely wide tires in a tubbed rear wheel area and a beautiful
interior.
![]()
The
band began playing and they sounded pretty good. We even asked about
their rates for them playing one of our cruise-ins. After the sun went
down, the weather changed and the wind began blowing cold air. We raised
the top on the Mustang, told a few of the other members we were leaving,
then put our chairs in the trunk and headed back to Burkesville.

Friday Night Cruisin' The Square
The Cumberland River Cruisers brought their cars to the Courthouse
Square Friday evening at 6 PM. The Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration
Committee had dash plaques for the CRC to pass out to the first 50
vehicles that attended the Friday
Night Cruisin' The Square. Club members setup a table and played
music through the PA system, gave away door prizes, handed out the dash
plaques, and furnished free spiced apple cider to those in attendance.
The
Square was a crowed place with an exceptional amount of traffic passing
through town and attending various events being held in conjunction with
the Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration. At 7 PM the Cruisers shut down
their music and the Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration began a street
event on Hill Street. First were the cloggers, then "Big 'T' and the
Twisters" began playing live music a little after 8 PM.
The
crowd size was probably over 500 people milling around the cars,
listening to the music and watching the girls in their "poodle" skirts
twisting the night away.
It
was a unique event and everyone seemed to enjoy all parts of it. At 9 PM
the band paused and a small fireworks display was set off near the river.

Bicentennial Car Show
There were a lot of early arrivals for the Burkesville
Bicentennial Celebration Car Show at J&D Restaurant Saturday
morning. The Cumberland River Cruiser Members were helping with the
logistics of running the show. We started registering vehicles as soon
as we were setup and ready.
Jimmy
Patterson had the building open and James Pruitt and some of his family
were cooking during the day. Kelsey Bow was helping with the door prizes
and parking.
During
the day, an announcement was made about Jimmy's wife, Dorothy,
concerning her health problems. The show organizers decided to forgo the
usual 50/50 drawing and take donations for Dorothy. The people in
attendance gave generously. Most of the people attending the show took
time to walk over to the edge of the highway and watch as the
Bicentennial Parade passed by. At 2 PM, we had 78 cars when we closed
the registration. Several more pulled in after they had drove in the
parade. Kelsey Bow passed out door prizes to people with the tickets
drawn at random. Votes were being counted in the 7 categories as the
door prizes were being awarded. Jimmy came out of the restaurant and
shook hands with each person as he presented the winners with their
trophies.

After
the last trophy was presented, Phillip Davidson announced that we had
collected a donation for Dorothy. Linda Norris presented the money to
Jimmy and the crowd also gave Jimmy a nice round of applause as a thank
you.
It
was an emotional time, as Jimmy and Dorothy have sold the restaurant,
their house in Cumberland County and are moving back to Georgia to deal
with Dorothy's health problems.

Marrowbone Christmas Parade
Some of the Cumberland River Cruisers met in front of the Justice Center
in Burkesville and cruised over to Marrowbone to be in the Christmas
Parade. Several of the Cruisers were already in line when we cruised
into the parking lot in front of the church. It was a cool but beautiful
day for the parade and there were quite a few people that showed up to
participate in the event.![]()
The
Cumberland County High School Band was warming up in front of the church
before the parade started.![]()
People
were standing around talking and enjoying the friendly atmosphere as
parade organizers were completing the arrangements before signaling
everyone to form a line and begin the parade.

There
were crowds of people along the highway as we wound through town and
threw candy to the kids. Everyone was shouting "Merry Christmas" as they
threw the candy or picked it up along with the kids.

Albany Relay For Life Car Show
A few of the Cumberland River Cruisers attended the Albany Relay For
Life Car Show on Sunday. The rainy weather had caused the event to not
be held on Saturday and the turnout was lower because of the show being
on Sunday. They made the best of a bad situation and still had a fairly
good showing.
Two
CRC Club Members, Craig Coe and Jackie Booher, won trophies for their
respective entries.

Evansville, IN the day of the show.![]()
The

began packing up our stuff. We had very little trash to pick up as the
attendees of the event had really kept the park clean.
The
Cumberland River Cruisers would like to thank NAPA and especially Robert

Meet. We hope we can work together in the future and the event will grow
even larger to bring more people into Burkesville.

Cruise To Fountain Run
The Cruisers went to the Rolling Rods' Third Annual Classic Car Show in
Fountain Run on May 21st. The CRC Car Club left the Courthouse Square in
Burkesville at 8:30 AM and headed to Fountain Run. We followed each
other west on KY 90 and turned south on KY 163 through Tompkinsville,
then we went west on KY 1366 to Fountain Run. After about an hour an a
half, we pulled into the field where the Rolling Rods were holding their
car show. We were directed where to park and pointed to the tent where
they were registering vehicles. After registering and receiving a
'goodie bag', we came together for a group picture and then set out
walking around the grounds checking out the other vehicles that were at
the show.![]()
Members
of the Rolling Rods told me they had 87 vehicles that had registered at
the end of the time period.
The
judges made their rounds and the points were added up and then the
Rolling Rods began giving away door prizes and awards. Kendra Coe was a
door prize winner.
Carol
& Dave Neff received a Top 35 award as did Kent Cooper and Red Thrasher.

Bob
Rudig won a Trophy for Best Unrestored as our group looked on. Then Mike
Shoopman won for Best Older Mustang.
The
Best of Show trophy went to Mike Burton, from Albany, for his Yellow
Chevy Deuce
It
was great weather and the Rolling Rods conducted a nicely done car show
and they gave away a lot of nice trophies and awards. The Cruisers had a
good time at the car show, there was plenty of food available and a
friendly atmosphere. The Cruisers had a few trophies and awards to haul

Cruise To Columbia
The Cruisers met in Burkesville and left town at 4 PM Saturday heading
North on SR 61 towards Columbia. As the group rolled along, other club
members joined the convoy of cars, trucks and motorcycles. The 11
vehicle caravan turned East onto the Cumberland Parkway and then exited
the junction with SR 55. We turned into the parking lot at Tractor
Supply Company and waited to be told where to park. After parking and
talking with others for a few minutes, most of the club members
registered. Some of the Cruisers were awarded door prizes, but some left
early as the temperatures were above 90 degrees and being on the parking
lot seemed to make it even hotter. There were some really nice vehicles
at the cruise-in and it looked like most of the people had fun.
The
next CRCrusier event will be the 4th of July Celebration in Burkesville.

Country Cafe Cruise-In
We left home a little after 5 PM and drove towards Columbia, then turned
right on the Cumberland Parkway and exited at the 49 mile marker. We
went North on SR 55 and turned East on SR 80. After passing through
Russell Springs and going a few more miles East on SR 80, we turned
South on SR 76 and headed towards Alligator Boat Dock. A few miles down
SR 76 on the left was the Country Cafe. They are having a cruise-in
every Tuesday evening. It begins at 5 PM and is over at 8 PM ( I think
it is EST). There are no door prizes, but they are playing music and
enjoying each other's company. I parked the 56 Chevy, then Stacey, Linda
and I went inside the restaurant for supper. Linda and I had delicious
cat fish suppers with Cajun fries and cole slaw for $7.99. Stacey had
the Tuesday Night Special of Spaghetti and a salad with Texas Toast for
$4.99. Everything we ate was excellent.![]()
When
we finished eating, I went outside and took pictures of the cars that
were parked in the lot.
We
rolled out of the parking lot and headed back towards Burkesville. It
was a nice ride as the sun was vanishing below the horizon and the air
temperature was cooling down.

Green River Kruzers' Car Show
A few of the CRCruisers left Burkesville at 8 AM and headed north on SR
61 to Columbia to participate in the Green River Kruzer's 2011 Car Show.
The
Cruisers parked in the lot, set up their canopy and entered their cars
in the car show. The temperature was slightly over 90 degrees and the
shade provided by the canopy was welcomed. The canopy became even more
necessary when the rain began. We all huddled under it, inside a ten
foot square, for about a half hour, then the rain stopped for a while.
The Green River Kruzers quickly passed out the trophies during the time
there wasn't any rain falling. Our Cumberland River Cruisers Car Club
won the "Club Participation" trophy for having the most entries from a
single club.
Several
of the CRC members were awarded trophies for showing their vehicles.
The
picture below and to the right is with all the special class winners.

CRC members were happy with the "gold" we were able to take home to
Burkesville.

Alex Montgomery Car Show 2011
The weather was a bit chilly and a little breezy, but the sun was out
and sky was partly cloudy when the day began. Cars began arriving before
9 AM and kept coming till about noon. The Cumberland River Cruisers
started registering the vehicles around 9:30 and completed the day with
at least 50 entries. Terry Riley, the manager of Alex Montgomery, had
broken his leg a few weeks before the car show and was limited to moving
around the car lot in a electric golf cart, so Shawn and James took his
place for most of the day, helping with the setup and providing drinks
and food for the car show entrants. At 2 PM, voting was closed and the
ballots were counted while tickets were drawn and several door prizes
were given away to start the awards.![]()
The
Good Ol' Boys car club had the most members attending the car show and
they were given the Club Participation Trophy from the Cumberland River
Cruisers.![]()
Shawn
used a computer in the office to determine which entry had came the
farthest that day. It was Clifford Norris from Bowling Green that
received the Long Distance Trophy and he had driven 1.6 miles farther
than the owner that had came the next farthest.
![]()
The
votes cast by all the vehicle owners were totaled and a Top Ten Trophy
was passed out to each vehicle owner that had placed 2 through 11 in the
vote totals. Terry, James and Shawn collaborated on which vehicle to
receive the Alex Montgomery Dealer's Choice Trophy. Their selection was
made, and Anthony Flowers was presented the Dealer's Choice award for
his 1930 Model A.
![]()
The
top vote getter was then announced and Don Thompson was presented the
Best Of Show Trophy for his Blue 1957 Chevy BelAir.

Terry
was able to join all the trophy winners for a group photo near the end
of the car show.![]()

Heritage Days: Sock Hop / Cruise-In
A couple of the things the Events Committee had been planning were a
Sock Hop & Cruise-In. They had lined up a DJ and wanted several of the
Cruisers to bring their cars to the Hop. The Cruisers parked their cars
on the Courthouse Square with several other old cars and trucks from out
of town. The DJ began playing 50's & 60's music about 6:30. A little bit
later, they started the various dance contests and gave prizes to the
winners.

Heritage Days: Parade / Car Show
The Cumberland River Cruisers had been asked to put on a Heritage Days
Car Show for the Burkesville/Cumberland County Events Committee after
the Heritage Days Parade wound through town. A few of the CRC members
drove their cars in the parade.
While
the parade was going on, other members were busy setting up the tables,
door prizes and trophies for the Heritage Days Car Show in the Park.
After the parade had made the trip through town, the people pulled their
cars into the Park and then registered for the Heritage Days Car Show
and were given a Dash Plaque.![]()
There
was a DJ playing music and people could buy items from over 25 vendors
in the Park. There were also several food vendors. At 2 PM, the Cruisers
began counting the votes and giving away over $100 worth of door prizes.
After the numbers were drawn and the door prizes given away, the
trophies were awarded to the appropriate vehicle owners.

Country Cafe Car Show & Supper
A few of the Cruisers drove to Russell Springs and then went East on 80,
then turned South on 76 and ended up at the Country Cafe. Carol & Dave,
Chris, Randy, Stacey, Linda & Dave went to the Country Cafe to be a part
of the small cruise-in they have on Tuesday nights. We arrived just
before dark and were met by Darrell Smallwood and asked to park and fill
out entries for our cars. It was a free event and mainly just to bring
in customers for the Country Cafe. There were probably 30 cars, but some
of the pictures of the dark colored cars didn't turn out well enough to
be posted. The ones that showed up are below.
A
nice 55 Chevy pictured below with the owner and the Best Of Show Trophy .
After
the awards were passed out, the Cruisers went inside and enjoyed some of
the Country Cafe's 'cat fish' before cruising back towards Burkesville.

Burkesville Christmas Parade
A few of the Cumberland River Cruisers drove their vehicles in the
Burkesville Christmas Parade Saturday evening. The streets were lined
with spectators as the parade wound it's way from the Cumberland County
High School through the Courthouse Square and to the south end of town.
Candy was thrown to the spectators as the WKYR radio station broadcast
the parade live. Mrs Nancy Buchanan was this year's Grand Marshall for
the Christmas Parade and rode in a big red Cadillac driven by Kenneth
Ballou.
There
was a nice spirit of giving being shown as we watched the parade from
the Courthouse Square. Candy was thrown to the spectators and free
cookies and hot chocolate was also being passed out. The
Burkesville/Cumberland County Events Committee did a nice job with the
Story Book Christmas Parade. Thanks to those on the committee and Judge
Executive John Phelps for the effort they put forth.
The
Cumberland River Cruisers wish EVERYONE a Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year.
